In 1930, Opel launched the first version of its light truck Blitz, a name that means “lightning” in German. With an initial load capacity of one ton and a simple but solid structure, the Blitz quickly became one of the most popular commercial vehicles of the era.

By the mid-1930s, with Opel already under the control of General Motors, the Blitz was redesigned to incorporate more powerful engines and versatile bodies. It was manufactured both in Rüsselsheim and in the new Brandenburg plant, and could be found in van, flatbed, or bus versions.

During World War II, the Opel Blitz was massively requisitioned by the German army and produced in more than 130,000 units. Its mechanical reliability, easy maintenance, and adaptability to difficult terrain made it the workhorse of the Third Reich, present both on the Eastern Front and in Africa. In addition to the standard versions, variants were built with all-wheel drive and specialized configurations such as ambulances, radio units, tankers, or even mobile kitchens and improvised motorhomes.

Despite its military use, the Blitz survived the war and returned to the civilian market in the 1950s, adapting to the reconstruction needs of a devastated Europe.
